You won't need much to get started marking your Bible. Below some basics are
listed that you will definitely need.
A BibleThis is the most basic piece of equipment. And not all Bibles work. For instance, I have one of the smallest complete Bibles in the world (KJV world, anyway). The margins are less than 1/4 inch! So that wouldn't work! The Bible I mark in is a Cambride Concord 8vo Wide-Margin Edition; it has generous margins and the print is not overly small. The size is about 8"x9 1/2"x1 1/4", and has over 1" margins on all sides except the top which has 3/4". It is definitely ideal to have this much space, especially if you want to put in notes. However, I have marked studies (some of the ones on this site) in a Bible that had 1/2" margins. I even marked a few studies in the pocket Bible, believe it or not, but I didn't have room for comments, and I just used pencil, not colors. But I'm getting ahead of myself! You will want to have some blank pages in the Biblethough if you don't they can be inserted. On these pages, you will write the first text of the study. Just so you know, these studies work best with the King James Version of the Bible. I believe it is the best translation available. However, I suppose they would work with other versions. But some of the comments explain words in the KJV that are different in other studies. Pens and/or PencilsThis is the second most basic equipment. I write with pencil mostly, because that allows for correcting mistakes. Mechanical pencils are the best, because they don't get dull and never need sharpening. Make sure the lead is hard enough not to smear or smudge, but not so hard that you can't write without tearing the delicate pages of the Bible. And try not to make too many mistakes. They don't erase very well. I recommend using .5mm lead or smaller, but .7mm will work. It depends on how small you want to write. Children will find .7mm easier to use. Pens will work. You can get fine and extra-fine pens that won't show through the think Bible paper. Check Young Disciple Internet to see if they have any available. Sometimes they do. Or e-mail them and ask for their latest catalog. I have used and liked pens, but not in my current Bible. And I don't plan on using pens--at least for marking. I have used them for writing notes in the back--on the lined paper in the back that's more the quality of writing paper than Bible paper. Colored Pens/PencilsDepending on which method you decide to do, you might want to have a selection of colored pens or pencils. If you choose pens, be sure they won't show through on the other side of the page. They can be used for various things in Bible marking. And you may be like me, and choose only one color. But read the methods page before you make up your mind. RulerYou will only need a ruler if you underline. If you choose to do that, choose a ruler that's shortone that you can carry in your Bible. A thin one is ideal. Well, now you are all set! You should now pick a method. Click here to go to the Methods for Bible Marking page. |
